Need an O-ring that has to be resistant to chemicals, abrasion and heat? Then the HNBR O-Ring 70 Shore A is the one you need. Contrary to the NBR the HNBR is way more durable and robust. This makes the HNBR perfect when used in harsh environments. Examples include the automotive and gas & oil industries. Besides the fact that it is a good O-ring in harsh environments it is also a great choice when used in extreme temperatures. The Temperature range of the O-ring HNBR is -30°C to +150°C (-22 °F to 302 °F). Because of the high saturation level it has the perfect balance of flexibility and strength of 70 shore. With this O-ring, you can be confident that even when under pressure they will perform excellently. As the cherry on top, the HNBR O-Ring is also resistant to losing certain properties when exposed to various chemicals, oils and other liquids for long periods of time. The HNBR 70 Shore A O-Ring continues to deliver fantastic performance when used in conditions that were just appointed for long periods where other elastomers fail.

What is an HNBR O-ring?

But what exactly is an HNBR O-Ring. Here I’ll explain everything. HNBR is a hydrogenated version of the standard NBR (nitrile rubber) which makes it more resistant to harsh substances/chemicals and very high & low temperatures. HNBR is classified as ‘heavily saturated nitrile’ (HSN) which means it is more robust than NBR. The O-Ring HNBR 70 Shore A is one of the best resistant to oils and hydraulic fluids (petroleum-based). As a result it retains its excellent quality and mechanical properties. Even under high pressure this O-Ring will deliver great performance because it is so flexible but also because of its hardness of 70 Shore A.

The HNBR O-Ring is highly resistant to oils, freon and other various solvents. This is due to the chemical composition that the hydrogenated nitrile O-Ring has, all in all it makes long-term durability a guarantee. The o-ring is resistant to ozone, ageing and weathering which significantly increases its lifespan even in harsh environments and this is because the hydrogenation process strengthens the polymer structure.

What’s the O-ring HNBR used for?

The O-Ring HNBR 70 Shore A has many improved properties and is used in various industries where they need to perform well in different types of conditions. These O-rings are used in the automotive industry and you will often see them in fuel injection systems, engine seals and power steering components Because they are so resistant to certain oils and temperatures. Due to their mechanical strength and resistance, they will not degrade in quality even when continuously exposed to certain fluids.

In the machinery industry, HNBR O-rings are most commonly used because they have great resistance to high pressure. This is crucial as they are placed in hydraulic systems, pumps and compressors. Also in the oil and gas industry, this O-ring plays a major role in pipelines, valves and drills where resistance to chemicals (such as natural gas, petroleum and synthetic lubricants) is necessary. This O-ring is the perfect choice when used when exposed to hydrocarbons. The HNBR O-Ring 70 Shore A is also widely used in aviation hydraulic systems and fuel controls. Because they operate in extreme environments involving high and low temperatures. This O-ring offers balance between flexibiltieti and durability which ensures great performance

Benefits of the hydrogenated nitrile O-ring

There are many advantages that the O-Ring HNBR 70 shore A offers. We have sorted them out for you.

  • Temperature resistance: The HNBR O-Ring - 70 Shore A withstands temperatures from -30 °C to +150 °C (-22 °F to 302 °F) and maintains his flexibility and sealing integrity.
  • Chemical resistance: It has a high tolerance to petroleum-based oils, hydraulic fluids and automotive coolants.
  • Mechanical Strength: With a hardness of 70 Shore A, HNBR offers high tensile strength and prevents extrusion under pressure (Extrusion: pressing of liquid mass through a moulding plate followed by cooling)
  • Durability: Resistant to ozone, weathering and oxidation for longer service life in harsh conditions.
  • Minimal swelling: Little volume change when exposed to fuels and lubricants, making the O-ring still reliable over time.

Disadvantages of the O-ring HNBR

Unfortunately there are also disadvantages that the O-ring HNBR 70 shore A has. We’ll explain these below.

  • Higher costs: Compared to standard elastomers such as NBR or EPDM the HNBR O-rings are more expensive because they are a lot more sophisticated.
  • Limited resistance to fluorine: despite being highly resistant to oils and chemicals the hydrogenated nitrile O-ring does not offer the same extreme resistance as FKM or FFKM materials.
  • Less flexibility in extreme cold: Despite the balance of hardness and flexibility offered by the 70 Shore A, performance may decrease at temperatures below -30°C.
  • Not ideal for dynamic sealing: For use with continuous movements or intense friction the HNBR O-ring is less suitable due to its limited tear and abrasion resistance.
